A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Philharmonic's Nutcracker


The stage at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts will be alive with a sugar plum fairy and dancing mice as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents its 17th annual Nutcracker Ballet on December 7, 8, 9, 2012.  A.V.A. Ballet Theatre’s artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting rendition of the popular holiday ballet and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s moving score. Laura Jackson will conduct the orchestra.

Principal dancers who have performed with professional ballet companies such as Ballet West, Houston Ballet and the Diablo Ballet will perform the leading roles along side a large cast of local talent.

Nutcracker performances will be held Friday December 7th at 8pm, December 8th at 2pm and 8pm and Sunday December 9th at 2pm at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Reno. Ticket prices for adults are from $25 to $50. Ticket prices for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older are from $20 to $40.

A special Sugar Plum party will be held after the Saturday and Sunday afternoon performances where children can meet the Nutcracker characters.

Early Thanksgiving in Never Land - An A.V.A. Ballet Theatre Fundraiser

Join your friends from A.V.A. Ballet Theatre for their Early Thanksgiving in Never Land fundraiser September 28, 2012. This gala event will be held at the The Club in Town Center at Somersett.

Doors open at 6PM with a no host bar and a silent auction. Dinner will be at 7PM. The Thanksgiving feast will be prepared by chef/artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne.

There will be a performance by the dancers from A.V.A. Ballet Theatre.

All guests are encouraged to wear their favorite Peter Pan attire (Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, indians, pajamas, alligators, pirates, or lost boys).

The Nutcracker Open-call Auditions

Auditions: Saturday October 6, 2012
Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. Virginia St.
(use Stage Door entrance on the corner of Center and State Streets)

Requirements:

  • Girls and boys must at least be in the third grade or 8 years or older by September 1, 2012 in order to audition 
  • Dancers of all levels of experience are encouraged to audition, however, three years of ballet training is recommended 
  • Height requirements are listed below
  • Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to audition time in order to register and be measured
  • If your height is on a cusp, feel free to attend both or either audition

  •  1:30pm - 2:15pm  Girls 3'11" - 4'3"
  • 2:15pm - 3:00pm  Girls 4'3" - 4' 6"
  • 3:15pm - 4:00pm  Boys and Girls 4'6" - 5'

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre's Rock Ballet Vortex



The Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch will come alive with ballet grace and passionate rock, dance, Broadway and alternative music as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the rock ballet Vortex July 20th and 21st as part of the Artown celebration. 

Artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting contemporary ballet that will be like no other you have ever seen. Imagine ballerinas performing grande jetés to music by popular rock artists. The stage will feature scaffolding and exciting props and sets that will create a visual spectacle that can not be missed.

Featuring a cast of extremely talented performers from Reno and starring guest artists from Ballet West, the rock ballet Vortex will feature demanding and passionate movement inspired by the dynamic of the music.               

The performances of Vortex are at 8:30pm July 20th and 21st at the beautiful Bartley Ranch Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater. Ticket prices are $15 and $20 for adults. Students with I.D. only $10. This is a PG 13 show. Special VIP tickets that include wine/beer and hors d’oevres are available for $40. The gates open at 7:30pm for picnicking and the VIP party. Vortex during the month of July is part of the 17th annual Artown festival, July 2012.  The month-long summer arts festival features more than 400 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide. Artown receives major funding from the City of Reno, and is sponsored by Grand Sierra Resort, U.S. Bank, NV Energy, JLH Inc., Waste Management, Basin Street Properties, Reno Gazette-Journal, KOLO 8 News Now, KTHX-FM and KNPB with additional support from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre Summer Dance Camp


A.V.A. Ballet Theatre will be holding its annual summer dance camp June 11–June 15, 2012. This dance camp is designed for students age 8 years of age and older who have had previous ballet training. The dance camp includes instruction in ballet and pointe variations.

Classes are held Monday through Friday at the Conservatory of Movement, 73 West Plumb Lane, Reno, Nevada. The morning session is for students 8-9 years of age and includes ballet technique. Students ages 10 to 12 will learn ballet technique and choreography. The afternoon session is for advanced students and includes ballet technique and pointe/variations. Mayo Sugano, a professional dancer at Diablo Ballet, will be the instructor.
“Our summer camp provides an intense level of training,” says A.V.A Ballet Theatre artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne. “For those students who want to greatly improve their dance skills this summer camp will provide the instruction and technical expertise that they are seeking.”

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre Rock Ballet Auditions


A.V.A. Ballet Theatre will hold open auditions for its upcoming production of Vortex, a contemporary rock ballet choreographed by artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne.  Principal, Soloist and Corps de Ballet roles will be cast for up to 25 dancers. All female dancers must be prepared to audition en pointe and have at least four years experience. We are casting for men and women. Auditions will be held Saturday April 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Conservatory of Movement, 73 West Plumb Lane (Lakeside Shopping Center).

The rock ballet Vortex will be part of the annual Artown celebration and will be performed at the Bartley Ranch Hawkins Amphitheatre July 20th and 21st. Powerful and passionate, Vortex fuses contemporary ballet and dance movement with pulsing, grinding beats of modern rock and alternative music.

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre's Alice in Wonderland


The spring gala season for the A.V.A. Ballet Theatre opens with the classic ballet Alice in Wonderland on April 21st and 22nd, 2012 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the magnificent score to this wonderful ballet. Re-staged and re-choreographed by Alexander Van Alstyne, Alice in Wonderland is the captivating story of Alice’s adventures through the looking glass. The White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts have starring roles in this fantasy adventure. This classic story is filled with mesmerizing dance, intrigue, comedy and is fun for the entire family.

Professional dancers from Ballet West will also perform as the White Rabbit, Tiger-lily and the Knave of Hearts. The large cast includes many talented dancers from numerous different ballet studios in the Reno area.

The Saturday April 21st performance will be held at 8pm and the Sunday April 22nd performance will be at 2pm. Ticket prices for adults are from $25 to $40.
