Reno, NV - The stage at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts will be alive with a sugar plum fairy and dancing mice as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the annual Nutcracker Ballet on December 9, 10, 11, 2016.  A.V.A. Ballet Theatre’s artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting rendition of the popular holiday ballet and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s moving score. Laura Jackson will conduct the orchestra.

Principal dancers who have performed with professional ballet companies such as Ballet West, Houston Ballet and the Diablo Ballet will perform the leading roles along side a large cast of local talent.

Nutcracker performances will be held Friday December 9th at 8pm, December 10th at 2pm and 8pm and Sunday December 11th at 2pm at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Reno. Ticket prices are $25 to $55 with discounts for seniors and children.

A special Sugar Plum party will be held after the Saturday and Sunday afternoon performances where children can meet the Nutcracker characters.

Nutcracker Open Call Auditions


Auditions: Sunday September 11, 2016
Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. Virginia St.
(use Stage Door entrance on the corner of Center and State Streets)

$10.00 Audition fee per person – For more information call 775-762-5165

Requirements:

  • Girls and boys must at least be in the third grade or 8 years or older by September 1, 2016 in order to audition 
  • Dancers of all levels of experience are encouraged to audition, however, three years of ballet training is recommended 
  • Height requirements are listed below
  • Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to audition time in order to register and be measured
  • If your height is on a cusp, feel free to attend both or either audition

  • 12:00pm - 12:30pm  Girls 3'11" - 4'3"
  • 12:30pm – 1:00pm  Girls 4'3" - 4' 6"
  •   1:00pm – 1:45pm  Boys and Girls 4'6" - 5'
  •   2:00pm – 3:00pm  Boys and Girls 5' - 5'6"
  •   3:15pm – 4:00pm  Corps de ballet men and ladies (ladies must be en pointe) 5'3" minimum height
  •   4:00pm – 4:15pm  Ballroom Dancers -  men and ladies (for the Party Scene)

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre's Rock Ballet Vortex



Now Free to the Public!



Reno, NV - The Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch will come alive with ballet grace and passionate rock, dance, and alternative music as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the rock ballet Vortex July 15th and 16th as part of the Artown celebration. 



Artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting contemporary ballet that will be like no other you have ever seen. Imagine ballerinas performing grande jetés to music by popular rock artists. The stage will feature scaffolding and exciting props and sets that will create a visual spectacle that cannot be missed.



Thanks to generous support from the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation, the E.L. Cord Foundation, the Nell J. Redfield Foundation and the Arthur and Mae Orvis Foundation, the rock ballet Vortex is free to the public. The gates open at 7:30pm for picnicking and the shows begin at 8:30pm. This is a PG-13 production.

Vortex during the month of July is part of the 21th annual Artown festival, July 2016.  The month-long summer arts festival features more than 500 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide. Artown receives major funding from the City of Reno, and is sponsored by Grand Sierra Resort, U.S. Bank, NV Energy, Reno Tahoe USA, RGJ Media, KOLO 8 News Now, Reno Media Group, and KNPB Public Television. Additional support is received from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Frozen Snow Queen

Reno, NV - The spring gala season for A.V.A. Ballet Theatre opens with the classic ballet The Frozen Snow Queen on April 9th and 10th at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. Choreographed by Alexander Van Alstyne, The Frozen Snow Queen is the captivating story written by Hans Christian Andersen. In the tale, the young Gerda searches for her friend Kai after his heart has been pierced by a fragment of an evil mirror. Kai falls under the spell of the Frozen Snow Queen and it is up to Gerda to save him from his icy fate. This classic story is filled with mesmerizing dance, intrigue, and is fun for the entire family. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the exciting score.

Outstanding guest principal dancers who have danced with Salt Lake City’s Ballet West will perform with the large cast from A.V.A. Ballet Theatre.

The Saturday April 9th performance will be held at 8pm and the Sunday April 10th performance will be at 2pm. Ticket prices for adults are $25 to $45.
