A.V.A. Ballet Theatre's Nutcracker

Reno, NV - The stage at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts will be alive with a sugar plum fairy and dancing mice as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents its 16^th annual Nutcracker Ballet on December 9, 10, 11, 2011.  A.V.A. Ballet Theatre’s artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting rendition of the popular holiday ballet and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s moving score. This will be conductor Laura Jackson’s encore Nutcracker.

Principal dancers from professional ballet companies such as Ballet West, Houston Ballet and the Diablo Ballet will perform the leading roles along side a large cast of local talent.

 Nutcracker performances will be held Friday December 9th at 8pm, December 10^th at 2pm and 8pm and Sunday December 11th at 2pm at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Reno. Ticket prices for adults are from $26 to $51. Ticket prices for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older are from $21 to $41.

 A special Sugar Plum party will be held after the Saturday and Sunday afternoon performances where children can meet the Nutcracker characters.

Alice in Wonderland Auditions

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre will hold open auditions for its upcoming production of Alice in Wonderland, a classic favorite choreographed by artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne. 

Auditions will be held Saturday, January 15, 2012 at the Conservatory of Movement 73 West Plumb Lane Reno, Nevada. Auditions will be held at the following times:

11:00 am 8 – 9 year olds (Boys and girls)

11:30 am 10-13 year olds (Boys and girls)

12:30 pm Corps de Ballet (Girls en Pointe)

 1:30 pm Male Dancers and Character Roles

Rehearsals will begin the first of February

Requirements:

• Girls and boys must at least be in the third grade or 8 years or older by September 1, 2011 in order to audition

• Dancers of all levels of experience are encouraged to audition, however, three years of ballet training is recommended

• Height requirements are listed below

• Please arrive at least 30min prior to audition time in order to register and be measured

• If your height is on a cusp, feel free to attend both or either audition

Schedule:

• 1:30pm - 2:15pm Girls 3'11" - 4'3"

• 2:15pm - 3:00pm Girls 4'3" - 4' 6"

• 3:15pm - 4:00pm Boys and Girls 4'6" - 5'

• 4:00pm - 4:45pm Boys and Girls 5' - 5'6"

• 5:00pm - 5:45pm Corps de ballet men and ladies (ladies must be en pointe) 5'3" minimum height

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre's Around the World Fundraiser

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre will be holding a fundraiser at the Great Escape, 1575 South Virginia Street, October 1, 2011. The event will have an Around the World in 80 Days theme and will feature performances by the dancers of A.V.A. Ballet Theatre. Doors open at 6pm. Everyone is encouraged to wear attire from an exotic country. Foods from around the world will be served.

 

Tickets are $100 and include dinner and entertainment. Tickets for groups of 10 can be purchased for $800. A.V.A. Ballet Theatre is the largest ballet company in northern Nevada and the only one to have the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra perform at all of their classical ballet performances at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.

 

This fundraiser will ensure that A.V.A. Ballet Theatre can continue to bring in high quality professional dancers, new costumes, and exciting sets for their performances.

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre Dance Camp

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre will be holding its annual summer dance camp June 13–June 24, 2011. This dance camp is designed for students age 8 years of age and older who have had previous ballet training. The dance camp includes instruction in ballet, jazz, and pointe variations.

Classes are held Monday through Friday at the Conservatory of Movement, 73 West Plumb Lane, Reno, Nevada. The morning session is for students 8-9 years of age and includes ballet technique and jazz. Students ages 10 to 12 will learn ballet technique, jazz and choreography. The afternoon session is for advanced students and includes ballet technique, pointe/variations, and jazz. The dance camp includes guest instructors from San Francisco Ballet.

“Our summer camp provides an intense level of training,” says A.V.A Ballet Theatre artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne. “For those students who want to greatly improve their dance skills this summer camp will provide the instruction and technical expertise that they are seeking.”
