A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Phil's The Nutcracker



The stage at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts will be alive with a sugar plum fairy and dancing mice as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the annual Nutcracker Ballet on December 8, 9, 10, 2017.  A.V.A. Ballet Theatre’s artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting rendition of the popular holiday ballet and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s moving score. Laura Jackson will conduct the orchestra.



Principal dancers who have performed with professional ballet companies such as Ballet West, Houston Ballet and the Diablo Ballet will perform the leading roles along side a large cast of local talent.



Nutcracker performances will be held Friday December 8th at 8pm, December 9th at 2pm and 8pm and Sunday December 10th at 2pm at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Reno. Ticket prices are $27 to $60 with discounts for seniors and children.



A special Sugar Plum party will be held after the Saturday and Sunday afternoon performances where children can meet the Nutcracker characters.

Requirements:

  • Girls and boys must at least be in the third grade or 8 years or older by September 1, 2017 in order to audition 
  • Dancers of all levels of experience are encouraged to audition, however, three years of ballet training is recommended 
  • Height requirements are listed below
  • Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to audition time in order to register and be measured
  • If your height is on a cusp, feel free to attend both or either audition

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Phil's Swan Lake



A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the classic Swan Lake on September 23rd and 24th at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the haunting score to this wonderful ballet with Laura Jackson conducting. Re-staged and re-choreographed by Alexander Van Alstyne, Swan Lake is the story of Odette who was turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. She tells the handsome Prince Siegfried that the only way the spell can be broken is if a man, pure in heart, pledges his love to her. Von Rothbart tries to keep the two apart but in the end they ascend to the heavens above Swan Lake.



Professional dancers from Ballet San Antonio will star in the lead roles. The large cast includes many talented dancers from four different ballet studios in the Reno area.



The Saturday September 23rd performance will be held at 8pm and the Sunday September 24th performance will be at 2pm. Ticket prices for adults are from $27 to $54. Vortex, the Ballet That Rocks!



A.A.V.A. Ballet Theatre Presents the Rock Ballet Vortex

Now Free to the Public!

Reno, NV - The Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch will come alive with ballet grace and passionate rock, dance, and alternative music as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the rock ballet Vortex July 14th and 15th as part of the Artown celebration. 

Artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting contemporary ballet that will be like no other you have ever seen. Imagine ballerinas performing grande jetés to music by popular rock artists. The stage will feature scaffolding and exciting props and sets that will create a visual spectacle that cannot be missed.

Thanks to generous support from the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation, the E.L. Cord Foundation, the Nell J. Redfield Foundation and the Arthur and Mae Orvis Foundation, the rock ballet Vortex is free to the public. The gates open at 7:30pm for picnicking and the shows begin at 8:30pm. This is a PG-13 production.

Vortex during the month of July is part of the 22nd annual Artown festival, July 2017.  The month-long summer arts festival features more than 500 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide. Artown receives major funding from the City of Reno, and is sponsored by Grand Sierra Resort, U.S. Bank, NV Energy, Reno Tahoe USA, RGJ Media, KOLO 8 News Now, Reno Media Group, and KNPB Public Television. Additional support is received from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Phil's Coppelia


The spring gala season for A.V.A. Ballet Theatre opens with the classic ballet Coppélia on May 6th and 7th at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. Choreographed by Alexander Van Alstyne, Coppélia is the captivating story of the doll created by Doctor Coppelius. The fanatical doll maker has created Coppélia to be his companion and secretly dreams of discovering a way of bringing her to life.

Baker Swanilda and her lover Franz are also intrigued by the life-like Coppélia. Each of them dances in hopes of attracting the doll’s attention. Throughout the ballet, the doctor, Swanilda and Franz each seek the attention of the girl they all eventually believe is alive.

This classic story is filled with mesmerizing dance, intrigue, and is fun for the entire family. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the exciting score.

Outstanding guest principal dancers who have danced with Salt Lake City’s Ballet West will perform with the large cast from A.V.A. Ballet Theatre.

The Saturday May 6th performance will be held at 8pm and the Sunday May 7th performance will be at 2pm. Ticket prices for adults are $27 to $54.
