Reno, NV - The stage at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts will be alive with a sugar plum fairy and dancing mice as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the annual Nutcracker Ballet on December 9, 10, 11, 2022.  Artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting rendition of the popular holiday ballet and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s moving score. Laura Jackson will be conducting the orchestra. Due to popular demand, we will continue to have a fifth performance.

Principal dancers who have performed with professional ballet companies such as Ballet West, Kansas City Ballet and the Diablo Ballet will perform the leading roles along side a large cast of local talent. 

Nutcracker performances will be held Friday December 9th at 8pm, December 10th at 2pm and 8pm and Sunday December 11th at 1pm and 7pm at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Reno. Ticket prices are $30 to $65 with discounts for seniors and children. 

A special Sugar Plum party will be held after the Saturday and Sunday afternoon performances where children can meet the Nutcracker characters.

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Phil Present Swan Lake



A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the classic Swan Lake on September 17th and 18th at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the haunting score to this wonderful ballet. Re-staged and re-choreographed by Alexander Van Alstyne, Swan Lake is the story of Odette who was turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. She tells the handsome Prince Siegfried that the only way the spell can be broken is if a man, pure in heart, pledges his love to her. Von Rothbart tries to keep the two apart but in the end, they ascend to the heavens above Swan Lake. 

Professional dancers from throughout the country will star in the lead roles. The large cast includes many talented dancers from four different ballet studios in the Reno area. Laura Jackson will be conducting the Reno Phil.

The Saturday September 17th performance will be held at 8pm and the Sunday September 19th performance will be at 2pm. Ticket prices for adults are from $30 to $57. A.V.A. Ballet Theatre Presents Vortex, The Ballet That Rocks

Reno, NV - The Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at the Bartley Ranch Regional Park will come alive with ballet grace and passionate rock, dance, and alternative music as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents Vortex, the Ballet That Rocks July 15th and 16th as part of the Artown celebration. 

 

Artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting contemporary ballet that will be like no other you have ever seen. Imagine ballerinas performing grande jetés to music by popular rock artists. The stage will feature scaffolding and exciting props and sets that will create a visual spectacle that cannot be missed.

 

Thanks to generous support from the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation, the E.L. Cord Foundation, the Nell J. Redfield Foundation, and the Arthur and Mae Orvis Foundation, the rock ballet Vortex is free to the public. The gates open at 7:00pm for picnicking and the shows begin at 8:30pm. This is a PG-13 production.

Vortex during the month of July is part of the 27th annual Artown festival.  The month-long summer arts festival features more than 500 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide.

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Phil's Beauty and the Beast

 


The spring gala season for A.V.A. Ballet Theatre opens with the classic ballet Beauty and the Beast April 23rd and 24th at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. Choreographed by Alexander Van Alstyne, Beauty and the Beast is the captivating story of the handsome prince who is cursed by an evil witch and transformed into a hideous Beast. He will remain a Beast until someone falls in love with him. That someone is of course, Beauty.

This classic story is filled with mesmerizing dance, intrigue, and is fun for the entire family. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s exciting score.

Outstanding guest principal dancers who have danced with Ballet San Antonio and Ballet Idaho will perform with the large cast from A.V.A. Ballet Theatre.
