While we will not be allowed to perform a traditional “The Nutcracker” we are going to do our best to inject a little of the show’s holiday spirt into the community. A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Phil will take the lemons they have been given and make lemonade.
First, we will be doing pop-up mini dances all
throughout the community. Several Reno Phil musicians and A.V.A. Ballet Theatre
dancers will perform a suite, such as the Mirlitons, from “The Nutcracker” at a
museum, a restaurant, and other public spaces. We can’t announce in advance
where these pop-ups will occur because we can’t risk drawing a large unsafe crowd.
But we plan to have a little Mother Ginger here and mice and soldiers over
there. Keep on the lookout for the holiday fun.
In addition, we are going to perform excerpts of Act
II at the Pioneer Center. We can do Act II because maintaining social distancing
with the dancers is possible. So the lucky 50 people in the theater will get
to see Spanish, Chinese, Arabian, Mother Ginger, Russians, Waltz of the
Flowers, and the Sugar Plum Fairy perform. There will be a much reduced Reno
Phil in front of the stage, not in the orchestra pit. Sets will be minimal but
we want to let the dancers perform and show us the talent they have been forced
to put on hold for the last seven months.
